Community allotment – come and enjoy some time in the great outdoors, sun and fun guaranteed – honest.'Crash' and Ashington Aggregates are donating to the allotment project about £7,000 worth of paving, gravel and sand, which is being delivered in a convoy of work lorries to the allotment site week commencing 21 May 2007. A small team of staff and young people have agreed to work all week at the allotment and to really take this project forward. As the old saying goes "many hands make light work". So if you would like to help please come down and volunteer for an hour or half a day, your support will be greatly appreciated. IndexTees Valley Voluntary and Community Sector ForumCarl elected to the Tees Valley Voluntary and Community Sector Forum – the aim of the forum is to lead, strengthen and support the VCS in the Tees Valley, by providing an arena for discussion, the exchange of information and a creative, strategic voice for the sector – not sure about this now! Bangalore – Community Building VenturesBangalore – As you will be aware, five members of staff from campus were in Bangalore India in March to help build a classroom and office at the Jamboo Savari Dinne School. The school serves the families of slum dwellers in the south of Bangalore. The project is the first phase of a plan that will hopefully see further work in south India over the coming years with our partners.
Making a difference – Did you know..?Over the last year, staff have supported young people to get Hardship grants from the Greggs Trust and the Glasspool Foundation to the value of £3,500. This is just brilliant and well done to all. (Applause all round!) IndexCommunity Campus used as a case studyThe project was used as a case study of good practice by Social Enterprise Tees Valley (SETV) - a mutual support network for social enterprises in the Tees Valley. It was also highlighted at the 'There's No Business Like Social Business' Conference recently held in Redcar and Cleveland [for more information regarding S.E.T.V. and social enterprise in general please visit www.nesep.co.uk] Community Campus recruit a GapperOur new Gapper funded through the Rank Foundation is in place. She will work with the Youth Project over the next nine months. This is our 3rd Gapper and builds upon our relationship with the Rank Foundation. The project received a visit from a national trustee of the Rank Foundation, Earl St Aldwyn visited in March to see what impact the Rank investment was creating. IndexCampus International - Hungary visit2 young people from the project along with the Co-ordinator carried out an advance planning visit to Nyirbator in the South East of Hungary. The project visited is a school/orphanage and the 2 young people from Community Campus are intending to carry out a 4 month European Volunteer Service placement working with the young people in the project as part of a sports development programme. IndexCommact Kerala Project IndiaCommunity Campus have held an involvement with Commact (Commonwealth network of local agencies) over the last 15 years. At a recent international conference a group of Commact members started a journey to develop a project to take young people from Middlesbrough and Glasgow to build low cost housing in Kerala with a Commact India project. A planning task force is to visit Kerala next year to move the project forward. IndexCommact and "Socialising the Global Economy" Conference LiverpoolCarl Ditchburn, Lawrence McAnelly and Chris Kemp (Community Campus '87 Chair) all attended the events, which brought together members of Commact to share good practice, develop networks and partnerships focusing on Community based initiatives from community organisations working throughout the Commonwealth. Housing and economic and social development were key aspects, and a “housing task force” has been established with representatives from India, New Zealand, Scotland and Community Campus to look at housing and construction solutions to severe housing problems. The “Globalising the social economy” conference was attended by representatives from Europe and Commonwealth countries, and it gave the opportunity to meet other social enterprises, support agencies, to share experiences and to attend a number of workshops, e.g. Finance, Social Accounting, Renewable energy etc. The whole experience was inspirational and presented the opportunity to further develop excellent networks and presented much food for thought. A community Development worker who is very interested in developing similar housing and training based initiatives in New Zealand. Piet, took in Heaven and attended the official opening of PERCY, following the completion of the building works by KEY SKILLS, visited East Cleveland Youth Housing and was even witness to Batman and Robin demonstrating up the Transporter Bridge! IndexCommunity Allotment projectCommunity Allotment Project Good news we have been successful in a bid to the Allotment Regeneration Initiative/ Esmee Fairbairn for some money to step up our work at the allotment in Saltersgill, Middlesbrough. The money will contribute to improving the site and paying for a part time worker to manage the project and further build links with The Saltersgill allotments association, local schools and community groups. IndexAward - NESEPAWARD-NESEP We have recently won the above award from NESEP (The North East Social Enterprise Partnership) for “Excellence in an Established Enterprise” We were up against a lot of top quality competition from social enterprises throughout the North East, but came out winners! IndexPOLSKA Young People volunteering in PolandCongratulations to every body. POLKSA-Young People volunteering in POLAND. A number of young people have just returned from a work experience trip to Poland. Community Campus '87 working in partnership with the Princes Trust have provided the opportunity for 4 young people from Campus to travel to Poland, and learn and experience the Polish culture, whilst gaining valuable (understatement!) work experience. Positive Feedback all round, well done to all concerned IndexKeyskills completes Percy projectKeyskills Completes PERCY contract October saw the opening of the new PERCY building in Middlesbrough. The internal refurbishment works where carried out by KEYSKILLS. The work was carried out to high quality standards and feedback was excellent. IndexCongratulations Jimmy - Top student awardWell done. Congratulations Jimmy-Top Student Award Jimmy Flutter, Housing Worker, was awarded the title of “Student of the Year”. Jimmy has been studying his HNC in housing at New College, Durham and won the award. IndexSupporting People Quality Assurance framework - 3B's and a CSupporting People- Quality Assurance Framework-3 B’s and a C! Following a recent inspection in Stockton of our supported housing services, we have been notified that we have received Three B’s and a C, which demonstrates that the service we deliver for young homeless people is indeed a Quality one. It shows that not only is the work of the Support Team valued by young people, but also meets the national quality standards. Next time we head for A’s!! IndexKey Skills makes catwalk debut! (Well at least one step closer)Key Skills make Catwalk Debut! (well at least one step closer!) Employees of the Key Skills Project can be seen modelling their latest “workware” fashions at various sites that they are working at across the Tees Valley, looking resplendent in Black Fleece and T-shirts, all carrying the Keyskills Logo. The clothing not only practicable for construction work, maintains that employees promote a positive image, wearing the “badge” with pride! One of the employees said that; “Modelling!, we’d look better building a catwalk than appearing on it!” IndexKey Skills Project-Training House!The Key Skills project will be starting work on a terraced house in central Middlesbrough. The project supported by the Links Foundation and starting on site in October 05 will provide training and learning opportunities for a range of people interested in developing their skills in construction. IndexYouth Project Team Challenge-RomaniaYoung people involved in Community Campus are undergoing a "Team Chalenge" to paint and decorate the ward of a childrens hospital in Romania. The project a partnership collaboration between Community Campus and The Princes Trust provides an opportunity for young people who have previously faced challenges in their own life to gain invaluable experience, broaden their horizons and to have a positive impact.
